Speech therapist Marian Alonso explains to us how speech therapy is carried out in her center through NeuronUP’s speech therapy exercises . In addition, she delves into the methodology and how she works with online speech therapy.
What is speech therapy? Definition of Speech Therapy
Speech therapy is the discipline that is concerned with the study, diagnosis, rehabilitation and prevention of disorders of human communication and associated functions.
In a speech therapy clinic we can encounter a wide range of conditions and, since each patient has their particularities, the same strategies do not necessarily work in similar cases.
Treatment in speech therapy
We, as speech therapists, work with:
- Orofacial therapy: dysphagias, facial paralysis, atypical swallowing…,
- voice treatments: nodules, vocal cord paralysis, edemas…,
- oral and written language therapy: language delay, speech sound disorders (dyslalias), dyslexia…,,
- cognitive therapy: stroke, intellectual disability, autism….
These are just some examples of treatments we can provide.
Materials
There are cases that require more elaborate and personalized resources to work with, such as those related to basic learning, language and development or cognitive and social skills.
Ultimately, what takes the most time is designing or obtaining speech therapy materials and resources that specifically target the objectives we want to achieve with each patient. Likewise, ensuring that the material is adapted to each user’s age, needs, cognitive level and preferences also requires a great investment of time.
How does NeuronUP help us? Speech therapy exercises
Time saving
NeuronUP is a tool that makes our work easier when creating or acquiring dynamic, up-to-date and attractive materials for patients. In addition, it allows working through a single program exercises for attention, memory, language or logic, among others.
That is, it greatly facilitates the work of searching for resources to reach the objective. Since they are digital or paper activities specific to each area of work. Digital activities are very interesting because they are developed like a game.
Online speech therapy: telerehabilitation
Another advantage of NeuronUP is the online sessions, which allow the patient to carry out the activities from their home.
For example, creating a session to work with a patient with dyslexia via a screen can be very difficult, since having to create the material ourselves in digital format and for it to be of high quality and stimulating is an almost impossible task.
With this program you can work on texts, words, letters in a way that is easy and intuitive for both the patient and us.
During the lockdown and with the development of online sessions, professionals in the field lamented the large amount of time specialists invested in preparing sessions and how little the work shone afterwards.
How do we work?
In our clinic the working methodology follows three basic principles:
- Evaluation,
- Treatment,
- Family involvement.
1. Evaluation
Evaluations are carried out periodically to objectively track the patient’s progress.
2. Treatment: in-person and online
Treatment is carried out on a weekly basis through in-person sessions and, in some cases, online. In the sessions we work on the goals set for each case, using current and innovative material so that it is appealing to the patient, whether an adult or a child.
3. Involvement
We use family involvement to generalize learning in daily life, since it makes no sense for the patient to be able to solve their difficulties during sessions but then fail to apply what they have learned at home.
For this last point, in some cases we use NeuronUP2GO, that is, NeuronUP home sessions, designing sessions that can be carried out together with a family member so they can provide help or become involved in the user’s work.
With perseverance and work, there is always improvement. We like to use the phrase “The impossible only takes a little longer” when a new case arrives at our clinic, because it applies to every single condition we work with.
