Alzheimer’s disease and its needs
People affected by Alzheimer’s need time; for a person with technical knowledge to determine which activities they should perform, and with whom. Because neuropsychologists and occupational therapists are needed.
They need to move. Movement is a protective factor, it exercises the muscles and the brain. It allows you to feel alive. Because they require the help of physiotherapists.
They need affection from their relatives, and they will not be able to give it if they are emotionally burned out. Because they need clinical psychologists to help the family manage the reality of Alzheimer’s.
They need to communicate, like all people. And for that they must have a communication system. And organizations to help them share their experiences and to claim what is due to them. Because speech therapists and social workers are necessary.
They require specialized care. Because without care there is no quality of life, and they suffer. Because doctors, nurses, and orderlies are needed.
Research resources as a lever for change
People with Alzheimer’s have hope that what has happened to them will not happen in the future to other people. Because they need (and we need) that Alzheimer’s research be one of the priority lines of research, and not just another branch.
And it may be that they do not recognize our faces, our names, or the situation they are in. But those of us who work with the reality of Alzheimer’s do not see a disease when they smile at us, or cry.
They need once and for all a state policy. Please.
Conclusions
The Alzheimer’s disease requires treatment by different specialists depending on the symptoms it causes. Moreover, investing resources in the research of Alzheimer’s is the way for future generations to be able to combat it.
Finally, we want to remind all the professionals who dedicate their efforts to improving the quality of life of patients with Alzheimer’s. To all those who dedicate their time and resources to the research of this disease. To all those who give them a voice. And especially to the relatives.
