The Spanish Confederation of Alzheimer’s (CEAFA) commemorates World Alzheimer’s Day, celebrated on September 21, highlighting the work of caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s through the campaign With “C” for Caregiver, with “C” for CEAFA #withCforCaregiver.
According to the study “The Caregiver in Spain. Current Context and Future Perspectives and Intervention Proposals”, prepared by CEAFA with the collaboration of the Sanitas Foundation, one in every four households in Spain is affected by a family member with Alzheimer’s, so CEAFA emphasizes that the family caregiver should be a priority focus in protection policies.
With this objective a promotional video has been launched aimed at highlighting the work of caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s, their dedication, love and daily effort.
The study highlights that the high prevalence of cases entails a great socioeconomic impact in addition to the difficulties faced by the person who assumes the role of primary caregiver, seeing their health deteriorate because of the demands and the time required to care for someone with Alzheimer’s disease.
- Caring for a person with Alzheimer’s disease entails an average expense of €31,000 per year for the family.
- The gender of the family caregiver is predominantly female, but the number of men assuming the role is increasing.
- More than 21% of family caregivers are over 70 years old and are retirees who care for their spouse.
The figure of the caregiver of people with Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia is one of the main and most valuable protagonists in the care of those who directly suffer from the disease and its effects.
The president of the Spanish Confederation of Alzheimer’s, Cheles Cantabrana, explains that “family caregiving is, today, the best ally our society has to try to cope with the devastating effects of the disease, and it will continue to be so in the future, complementing, and often substituting, the investment efforts of the health and social systems currently available. However, we should not self-convince ourselves of this situation nor resign ourselves to thinking that the family, family caregiving, is a way to care for the sick person in times of crisis”
