Alzheimer’s disease
Alzheimer’s is a neurodegenerative disease that records ten million new cases worldwide each year. One new case every three seconds. Count: one, two and three. One new case. In Spain 800,000 people are affected by the disease. This disease is the seventh leading cause of death in Spain and affects almost 50% of the population that reaches 85 years of age and, according to the latest studies from the Ministry of Health, at least one in ten over 65 suffer from it, to varying degrees.
What causes Alzheimer’s disease?
It is the progressive formation of senile plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the cerebral cortex, as well as neuronal and synaptic loss.
The dementia it causes involves the development of multiple cognitive deficits, among which are memory impairment and at least the alteration of one of the following areas: language, praxis, gnosis or executive functions.
How to treat Alzheimer’s?
There is no curative treatment for Alzheimer’s, however there are treatments to slow the disease and extend the quality of life of those who suffer from it, such as cognitive stimulation programs, which can be carried out individually or in groups.
