Professionals from Centros Amunt, Esther Escorihuela, Ariadna Navalón, and Natalia Cuenca, explain in this article how they carry out person-centered cognitive stimulation with the help of the NeuronUP platform.
In order to be able to stimulate a person it is necessary to capture their interest. To do this, we must first take into account their preferences, get to know them as a person and listen to their life story. By discovering each person’s idiosyncrasy, we can redesign the activities with a personal and appealing touch. Cognitive stimulation in Centros Amunt is carried out focusing on the person, with the help of the NeuronUP platform.
How is cognitive stimulation carried out at Centros Amunt?
Cognitive stimulation in day centers consists of working on the cognition and maintaining the preserved abilities. All areas of the person must also be encompassed: cognitive, emotional and physical. Since they are all interconnected, it is therefore necessary to stimulate from a holistic perspective.
Our team designs and updates the activity plan monthly. This is done in order to offer a wide variety of exercises that adapt to the different needs of our users. For this reason, we work with reference to three dimensions.
Área cognitiva
In the cognitive activities we use different resources to work on cognition in an engaging and enjoyable way. For example, we practice memory with conventional worksheets, group workshops, theater scenes, cooking workshops, etc.
Indeed, a tool that is very useful for us are computerized programs such as the NeuronUP platform. These programs stimulate them while they have fun. Likewise, new technologies are an instrument that helps and facilitates the planning of activities and their organization.
Área emocional
The emotional activities can be mainly divided into two blocks. First, the taking of awareness emotional and, secondly, the enjoyment of the emotion in situ.
The first are reflected in our activity plan as “Emotion”. These consist of working on the different emotions we can experience. For example: desire, sadness, love, etc. Likewise, identifying them, describing them and experiencing them allow their expression. Consequently, a liberating effect is produced that helps both at an individual level and the cohesion of the group.
Similarly, there are activities that allow us to feel and remember significant past moments of our life history. For example, music therapy, animal-assisted therapy and intergenerational activities. Of course, feeling is a vital element for every human being, as it anchors us to life.
Área física
Another of our fundamental pillars is the Physical Exercise. For us, it is important to maintain good physical health by focusing on the activity of “group gymnastics”. This allows us to stimulate the circulation and increase muscle tone. It is of vital importance in reducing the risk of falls and enhancing the physical autonomy.
Likewise, as part of physical maintenance, we also enjoy neighborhood walks. In these, we stimulate both physical abilities and socialization among users.

Specifically, NeuronUP offers us the possibility to plan the intervention. This is achieved through sessions and programs that can be applied in a group and/or individual manner. Indeed, these programs make it easy for us to set, on a monthly basis, the activities we want to work on each day within the center and even at home.
Moreover, thanks to the different types of cognitive stimulation activities that the platform offers, we can work on all the cognitive functions. This is carried out in a more specific way or through play and/or simulations of everyday situations.
On the other hand, it also provides us with alternative materials to facilitate intervention with all kinds of users. Also, for those with more advanced impairment, it has materials such as banks of images and sounds of all kinds, encompassing the different scenarios and situations of daily life.
Conclusions
At Centros Amunt, we work to carry out person-centered cognitive stimulation activities through activities such as those from NeuronUP.
Likewise, apart from the activities planned daily, we have created relational and experiential spaces that add to the dimensions mentioned: excursions, activities with neighborhood entities and cultural exchange with the practicum-erasmus.
Therefore, our intention is to generate a daily routine for the person, adapted 100% to them, where they can fully experience their occupational areas through sharing, enjoying and having fun.
